Bear Hunting Expedition
We
are offering the rare experience of bear hunting in the area of
Ilomantsi (Eastern Finland) where the distribution of bears is
the greatest in the European Union. Located on the
Finnish-Russian border, this is also the most eastern point of
the EU. A brown bear (Ursus arctos) is the largest wildlife
species in Europe. A full-grown male might weigh even as much as
300 kg and a female 150 kg. The average weight is 130 kg. In
Finland every year 100 -120 bears are hunted. Most of them are
hunted in eastern Finland where the bear population is most
concentrated, and is sparsely populated by humans. Bears also
wander into eastern Finland from Russia. The size of our hunting
area in Ilomantsi is over 20 000 hectares. Bear hunting
season in Finland begins on the 20th of August and ends usually
after the 1st of September. We are privileged to join in the hunt
with the local hunting club which claims every year 1-3 bears on
their own hunting area, where the animals are sighted almost
daily. Although our guides and their dogs belong to the elite of
Finnish hunters, a bear is a very challenging opponent even for
the experienced woodsman because of its cleverness and strength.
That is why a personal guide accompanies every guest who is
participating in the hunt. A bear hunting expedition has a
contact guarantee, which means seeing bear, hearing bear or
seeing fresh bear tracks. If contact with a bear is not reached,
20% of the price is returned to the customer. Other wild animals,
such as wolves (Canis lupus), wolverines (Gulo gulo) and lynx
(Lynx lynx) also inhabit the area. Expeditions are arranged at
five day long periods. On the first day participants have a
chance to get to know the local area, and become familiar with
the use of the hunting rifles on a private shooting range.
Participants can also take part in a lecture at the hunting cabin
about the local wildlife. The next three days are hunting of full
weight. The main goal is to get as many contacts with bears as
possible. In the mornings we are hunting with members of the
hunting club with the use of dogs. In the afternoons and evenings
we are lying in wait for bears on specially built platforms. Our
main target is to hunt bears, so having meals and other schedules
have not been planned beforehand. As the guests are considered to
be part of the local hunting club, they are able to participate
in a truly genuine Finnish hunting event. Accommodation is
arranged in the cabin of the hunting club, where we also have
meals when we are not in the wild.
